Don’t try to save a few dollars by going to someone who says he will give you a “free appraisal” of your jewelry! Ask yourself what his motives might be. A shiny sticker saying “Appraisal” is meaningless. An appraisal seal should show membership in a professional appraisal organization, and there is a cost involved as the Appraiser is not only doing competent work but is able to stand by his appraisal for legal or insurance purposes. Insurance companies often accept poor or incomplete appraisals for a reason: they return less to you if a settlement is necessary. There are risks involved, when there is a question of the value of your personal property. The risks could be: selling too low, paying too much, being audited when claiming a deduction for a charitable contribution, incurring tax penalties, getting your fair share of a property division, being under or over insured, or calculating estate taxes.
