RETAINING A COMPETENT APPRAISER

     Douglas B. Hanan, G.G., is a Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America, and is a Senior Member, #2202, of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers, specializing in Gems and Jewelry.

Shop carefully for a competent appraiser. In Oregon anyone can call himself an appraiser as there is no testing or licensing required.

    Don’t try to save a few dollars by going to someone who says he will give you a “free appraisal” of your jewelry! Ask yourself what his motives might be. A shiny sticker saying “Appraisal” is meaningless. An appraisal seal should show membership in a professional appraisal organization, and there is a cost involved as the Appraiser is not only doing competent work but is able to stand by his appraisal for legal or insurance purposes.
    Insurance companies often accept poor or incomplete appraisals for a reason: they return less to you if a settlement is necessary.
    There are risks involved, when there is a question of the value of your personal property. The risks could be: selling too low, paying too much, being audited when claiming a deduction for a charitable contribution, incurring tax penalties, getting your fair share of a property division, being under or over insured, or calculating estate taxes.

A professional appraisal can help you reduce risks by providing you a written opinion upon which you can base your financial decisions.

    Our appraisals are done using the latest computer technology and digital camera imaging. Detailed plot diagrams are done on all diamonds over .25 carats and all appraisals conform to the Appraisal Boards Standards. We have a fully equipped gemological laboratory on the premises to verify the identity of your gem.
   We have performed appraisals for attorneys, Personal Representatives, and agents of the I.R.S. for the United States Treasury Department.

We offer Litigation support and Expert Witness services.

    Our fees for appraisals are $80 for the first item, $100 for diamonds over one carat. There is a $20 charge for each additional plot diagram if needed. Some items without gems, that only need their gold content verified, can be as low as $35. To sort through an estate collection, to see what needs to be appraised is $60 per hour. Fees are not based on the value of the items.
