From the oldest coins in 500 B.C. to Renaisaance, when the screw press was invented, coins were produced by the strike of a hammer--by hand.  Early American coins were made with a screw press. Later there were horse powered presses, steam presses and the hydraulic presses of today.
The G.T. is the mint mark. The 1 oz. .999 Pure Silver show plainly surrounding the seascape on the obverse side of the coin.
The dies for these unique pieces were publicly destroyed at the Coos Bay Centennial Banquet, October 24, 1974, limiting this rare edition to 1000 pieces.
Doug Hanan swings a twelve pound hammer high overhead, then brings it crashing down to strike the design into the shining ovoid of silver.
Once again the quiet lapping of the water, and the cries of th4e gulls have been shattered by the sounds not heard since the Middle Ages.  A coin has been struck--by hand--to commemorate Coos Bay’s Centennial.
Molten silver is poured into a sand mold.  When cooled, the silver planchets are polished and smoothed and placed between the hand carved dies (one for each side of the coin).  The power of the hammer blow impresses the design into the silver, the amount of relief varying with the force of the blow.
